On the 14th of November, AC members were invited to join the SURIMI Project Workshop, organized exclusively for Advisory Councils members.

Funded by Horizon Europe, the SURIMI Project is developing nine socio-ecological models to be integrated into the European Digital Twin Ocean (EU DTO) – the EU’s main digital platform designed to enhance understanding of the ocean’s past and present and to generate reliable forecasts of its future behaviour.

By combining ecological and fisheries data with economic and social information, SURIMI aims to strengthen the EU DTO’s capacity to support evidence-based decision-making and marine management strategy evaluations across European waters. The success of the project relies on a bottom-up, stakeholder-driven approach, in which the active involvement of the fishing sector and inclusion of local knowledge can help shape future management decisions.

This workshop was an opportunity to receive an update on the project’s progress, but also a key moment to share members’ expertise and ensure that the models under development reflect the real-world challenges and priorities of the industry.
